Police have released more details in the arrest of a woman charged with burning down the Ka’u home she was living in.

The fire was started early Wednesday morning in the home on the 92-8800 block of Reef Circle Mauka in Hawaiian Ocean View Estates.

Emily Smith, 36, of Ocean View, allegedly struck a responding firefighter, police said.

Police determined the fire was set intentionally and arrested Smith at the scene.

They investigated the case and arrested her on charges of first-degree arson and third-degree assault at 9:20 a.m. Tuesday.

The firefighter did not require treatment, police said.

Damage to the structure was estimated at $175,000.
